Freddie Steele player profile:
Freddie Steele is remembered as one of Port Vale’s greatest-ever managers, but he initially joined the club in a player manager role.
Born in Hanley, Steele began his career at Stoke City. He had a sixteen year spell, interrupted by World War Two, at the club. He made 251 appearances and scored 159 goals. His form saw him picked for England between 1936 and 1937 where he scored eight goals in just six appearances.
After a spell with Mansfield Town between 1949 and 1952, he was appointed as Port Vale player-manager in 1951, replacing the unpopular Ivor Powell.
His Vale playing career was for just two seasons – 1951-52 and 1952-52- when he made 25 appearances and scored twelve goals. He finished playing in 1953 and then promptly managed the team during the memorable 1953-54 season. Steele’s side won promotion and reached the FA Cup semi-finals as the side set numerous club records.
He finished his first management spell with Vale in 1959 but came back for a second spell between 1962 and 1965.
