Colin Harper player profile:
Experienced left-back Colin Harper was signed by Port Vale manager Roy Sproson in July 1977. The defender was appointed as player coach at Vale Park. Harper had begun his career with a lengthy eleven year spell at Ipswich Town and had also had loan spells at Grimsby Town and Cambridge United.
He had made just four appearances as a player before Sproson was dismissed and Harper was appointed caretaker manager in October 1977. Harper garnered press headlines when he asked players not to smile in training as it was a serious matter. His spell lasted just a month as he was replaced by Bobby Smith in November.
New boss Smith decided to bring in his own staff and Harper’s contract was cancelled in January 1978. After leaving Port Vale, Harper was appointed as player-manager of Waterford and later had a couple of managerial stints in English non-league football.
