Time at club: 1950-1958
The legendary locally-born winger was a key player in the famed Iron Curtain side of 1954.
He progressed through the junior ranks to become a professional in 1949 although his first year was disrupted by national service.
His performances in the 1953-54 season were reportedly so good that Vale turned down a “blank cheque” offer from Cardiff for Askey’s services.
He left to join Walsall in 1958 for what was reported to be a “substantial fee” before moving on to Mansfield Town.
