Colin Askey player profile:
The legendary locally-born winger Colin Askey was a key Port Vale player in the famed Iron Curtain side of 1954.
He progressed through the Valiants junior ranks to become a professional in 1949 although his first year was disrupted by national service.
After being a bit part player in his first seasons, he broke through to the first-team in the 1953-54 season. His performances during that season were reportedly so good that Port Vale turned down a “blank cheque” offer from Cardiff City for Askey’s services.
After an eight year stay in the Potteries, he left to join Walsall in 1958 for what was reported to be a “substantial fee.” He later moved on to Mansfield Town where he finished his playing career.
