Basil Hayward was a legendary player for Port Vale FC. Born in Leek, He joined the Valiants in 1946, aged 16, and made his first-team debut later that year. He began his playing career as a central defender before being played as a forward by manager Freddie Steele.
Hayward scored the first hat-trick at the Vale Park stadium and was the club’s leading scorer in the 1952-1953 and the famous 1953-1954 season. He was also ever-present for the Valiants in the 1956-1957 season.
After over 370 appearances, Hayward ended his twelve year stay at Vale Park in 1958. After departing the Valiants, he spent two years at Fratton Park before joining Yeovil Town for a spell as the player-manager. He was also the manager of non-league Bedford Town and also managed Gillingham FC between 1966 and 1971.
