Andy Shankland player profile:
Andy Shankland was a locally born player who progressed through the junior ranks to be awarded a professional contract in 1982. Shankland had already played for the Vale first-team by then, making his debut in 1981 in a game against Tranmere Rovers.
Unfortunately, Shankland’s time at Port Vale was affected by injuries especially to his ankles. The injuries meant he never reached double figures in the four seasons he was employed as a professional.
He was forced to retire from the game through an ankle injury in 1986. He had made twenty nine appearances for the club and scored twice. He was also part of the Port Vale FC squad for two promotion campaigns.
It was a sad end to a promising career with Port Vale team mate Mark Bright saying that if he had stayed clear of injuries, Shankland could have been a major talent in the game.
