Alf Strange player profile:
Born in Derbyshire, Alf Strange was an inside forward who was spotted by Portsmouth scouts. He began his professional career at Pompey in 1922 and helped them to promotion in 1924.
Frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunities, Strange joined Port Vale from Portsmouth in 1924 in search of more regular football and he soon became a crowd favourite with his skill and close control.
His most prolific season for the club was 1925-26 when he scored seventeen goals including a hat-trick against Clapton Orient as well as four goals against Blackpool.
In 1927, he moved to Sheffield Wednesday for a “substantial” fee. He made twenty appearances for England while at Wednesday before finishing his playing career at Bradford Park Avenue. His playing stats including over four hundred senior appearances, 67 goals and two League championships while at Sheffield Wednesday.
After retiring as a player, he had a brief spell managing Bedford Town.
