Akpo Sodje was a powerful forward who was signed on a free transfer by Port Vale in 2006 following his release by Darlington.
One of a large footballing family, Sodje had previously played for Huddersfield Town, QPR and a number of non-league sides before joining Darlington in 2005.
Sodje had an extremely impressive 2006-2007 season for the Valiants. He scored on his league debut and netted four in an away win against Rotherham United. He formed a prolific partnership with fellow striker Leon Constantine with Sodje netting sixteen goals and Constantine finding the net 26 times. Sodje was subsequently named the club’s player of the year in his debut season.
He left in August 2007 to join Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £300,000. He later had spells with Charlton Athletic, Hibernian, Scunthorpe United and Tranmere Rovers.
