Adams concerned about squad depth
Micky Adams says the current Vale squad is “miles away” from the depth he requires for the League One season.
Money for new signings may be an issue after chairman Norman Smurthwaite said that 75% of the playing budget had been spent even before the signings of Ryan McGivern, Byron Moore and Mark Marshall. With all three likely to be on decent salaries, it remains to be seen how much more money can be freed up to strengthen the squad.
However, Adams is clearly desperate to add new faces. Central midfield is an urgent priority while the manager would also like to add a right-back and a forward.
I think we are miles away at the minute to be honest, I really do. We need some more bodies in the building…
The Vale’s budget was reduced after poorer than expected season ticket sales. It could be argued that the lethargy over Adams’ contract (which was still unsigned after the “early bird” deal had expired) and the club’s lack of marketing skills in pushing season ticket sales have contributed to the poor sales.
Adams told the Sentinel: “I think we are miles away at the minute to be honest, I really do. We need some more bodies in the building.”
