Port Vale had dispatched Notts County in the first-round to be handed a plum cup tie against top-flight Liverpool in the next stage of the League Cup competition.
This second round League Cup game took place on the 20th October 1991 at Anfield. The Port Vale scorers on a famous night were Dutch midfielder Robin van der Laan with a header and then a late equaliser from striker Martin Foyle. The game was played out in front of a crowd of 21,553 with around 8,000 travelling Port Vale supporters in attendance.
The second-round replay took place at Vale Park on the 20th November where Liverpool comfortable won 4-1 (Foyle with the Port Vale consolation goal) in front of a crowd of 18,725.
