Video vault: Fulham v Port Vale, 1962
Well, this vintage clip is worth watching for the plummy commentary alone. It shows Vale (including Ken Hancock, Harry Poole and Bert Llewellyn) taking on Fulham at Craven Cottage.
About the game…
Port Vale had reached the fifth round after wins over Bradford PA, Crewe, Northampton and a memorable giantkilling of Sunderland in the fourth round. That match was played in front of 28,226 at Vale Park and was described as ‘a magical piece of soccer history’ by the press.
Naturally, media interest was high as Vale faced first division Fulham in the next round. The game was settled by a disputed penalty (as Vale’s high-profile cup games tend to be) and Fulham went on to reach the semi-finals.
