We’re now ten games into the season in both League One and League Two, and that means that clubs are beginning to establish their positions in each division.
There’s plenty of football left to play, but with fans constantly fixated on promotion and relegation, ten games in is a good time to step back and look at who stands to move up and down between the leagues (and who might be moving on to Football League Championship from League One).
In order to most accurately determine which teams, at this stage, seem likeliest to move up to promotion or down to relegation, we’re going to be using the Betfair sports betting odds on League One and Two. This site is a particularly helpful source in this regard because it offers odds objectively selected for each team, rather than only looking at match-ups. Any given team is given updated fixed odds on the likelihood of promotion or relegation, giving us great reference points that go beyond standings (which can be viewed easily at BBC online) and predictions and look at real betting odds.
So here’s how things stand with a few different scenarios heading into Week 11.
League 1
Best Odds For Promotion To Football League Championship
- Wolves (1/3)
- Peterborough (1/2)
- Leyton Orient (2/1)
- Preston (7/2)
- Brentford/Bradford (tie) (4/1)
Unfortunately, this list of favourite doesn’t include Port Vale, but with the club having managed (an albeit respectable) fourteen points from ten games, that shouldn’t be an enormous surprise. The interesting thing should be which of the top clubs can move themselves away from the 3rd-6th place play-off scamble.
Best Odds For Relegation To League 2
- Stevenage (5/6)
- Tranmere (1/1)
- Crewe (6/4)
- Notts County (7/4)
- Shrewsbury (7/4)
If it’s unfortunate that the bookies think that Port Vale are a long shot for promotion, they at least seem safe from relegation. The five clubs on this list are all off to dreadful starts and the bookies have taken notice.
League 2
Best Odds For Promotion To League 1
- Chesterfield (4/11)
- Fleetwood (1/2)
- Oxford United (9/4)
- Portsmouth (3/1)
- Rochdale (3/1)
It looks like being a tough battle for promotion to League One although outside of this group, Exeter may also be in with a shout of going up.
Best Odds For Relegation To Conference National
- Accrington (4/9)
- Torquay (4/1)
- Hartlepool (6/1)
- York City (7/1)
- Bury (7/1)
There’s not a lot to say about this batch, as barring what would be a shocking drop into relegation, Port Vale will almost certainly not be seeing any of them next season. Accrington, in particular, are off to a miserable start, with just two points and a -12 goal differential after ten games.
