Are Vale set to sign a defender?
Port Vale could be adding one or more faces to their defensive ranks, if comments on social media platforms are to be believed.
Vale have picked up a number of injuries in their back-line in recent weeks and that lengthy injury list leaves the side short of numbers for the start of the new season. Vale were already in the market for another centre-half after Clayton McDonald, Darren Purse and John McCombe left in the summer but with these injuries, Vale’s need is now even more urgent.
The Valiants took a look at trialists Paul Reid and Mathias Doumbe in the friendly game against Kidderminster and it appears Doumbe will have another chance to earn a contract. BBC Radio Stoke’s Graham McGarry tweeted: “Quiet on Paul Reid — Doumbe involved tomorrow ”
Another player linked with the club is former Charlton Athletic defender Matt Taylor who is a free agent after being released in the summer.
Meanwhile, Port Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite suggested that a deal may be imminent tweeting “Sweety jar to be opened again” – in recent weeks, the “sweetie jar” reference has normally meant that an important announcement is about to be made.
