Adams: McCombe not guaranteed a start

Manager Micky Adams has told the Sentinel that there is no “guarantee” that fit-again John McCombe will return to the side on Saturday.

If somebody has been out for five or six weeks as John as has, he has to earn the right to get back in the side…

McCombe has been missing since he suffered medial ligament damage in Vale’s game against Fleetwood on New Year’s day. But he played 90 minutes of the reserves’ game against Hednesford this week.

McCombe also received 77% of the votes when OVF users were polled on who should partner Darren Purse in central defence, but Adams has stressed that the defender has to “earn” his first-team place.

The Vale manager told the newspaper:  “John is back in the fold, but there are no guaranteed first-team spots at this club

“You have to earn them.

“If somebody has been out for five or six weeks as John as has, he has to earn the right to get back in the side.”
