Barnet 1-3 Port Vale
Barnet 1-3 Port Vale: Sean Rigg scored twice in a rare start as a striker as Port Vale secured a fine away victory at Barnet,
Rigg was one of several changes to the Port Vale starting line-up as manager Micky Adams brought in Gareth Owen and Clayton McDonald as the Valiants lined up with three centre-halves. Stuart Tomlinson started in goal.
Doug Loft and Adam Yates both went close with efforts before Rigg’s fantastic 25-yard strike put the Valiants ahead.
Then playmaker Gary Roberts doubled the lead before the break when he smashed the ball high into the far corner of the net.
Sean Rigg’s 18-yard drive made the game safe for Port Vale before Barnet’s Jason Price completed the scoring with a close-range header.
Port Vale could easily have made it four, but Louis Dodds saw a one-on-one saved with Anthony Griffith unable to put away the rebound.
However, they held on to comfortably record their first win of the new season.
After the game, manager Micky Adams told the media: “Everybody stuck to their task and other than the goal that we conceded, it was a complete away performance really. We looked a big side today and there’s no great secret to getting out of this league, you need to be big, strong and physical at times.”
